Isolation and feeling distanced or removed from colleagues and coworkers throughout 2020 and into 2021 has many people feeling very alone. Working remotely from home offices, it is not uncommon for professionals to assume they are on their own to solve problems, create solutions, and to work through the challenges of the professional and personal life.

In the past, it was easy to go for lunch or a coffee with a trusted colleague, or even just drop in and visit someone’s office to get ideas, brainstorm, or talk about a particular challenge. Now, even these simple conversations often require booking a space on someone’s virtual calendar, and that may take days or even weeks.

Reaching Out For Help

It is important to keep in mind that just because we are working remotely, we are not disconnected from each other. Company HR departments, sales managers, internal coaches, and mentoring programs are still providing support in most businesses.

If you are feeling overwhelmed with a problem or stuck in a rut, this is a great time to take advantage of these types of services. Whether formal assistance through specialized programs or informal support from a trusted colleague, friend, or business associate, reaching out for help is an extension of your choice to grow as a professional.

Reaching out is a very empowering exercise. It is also makes you a bit vulnerable, but that is not a bad place to be. In reaching out for help or assistance, you are taking control over your personal and professional growth by tapping into the expertise and experience of those around you.

The Experience of the Helpers

Asking someone to brainstorm, discuss ideas, or mentor or coach you is not just about you. It is a way to recognize the experience and expertise of the individual you focus on to work as your mentor or coach.

Many people in the workplace have areas of excellence that are not always recognized or even a part of their job. However, they are eager and willing to share their knowledge. They are also boosted by the fact their talents, skills, and abilities are recognized by others.

It is also essential to consider that leaders at any level want their people and their teams to succeed. When they see a team member grow professionally, they also see their role in that growth. This creates a true win-win situation for everyone involved.
