When it comes to setting goals, many of us tend to focus on the “what”, i.e. what we want to achieve. But have you ever stopped to think about the “why”? Understanding the intention behind your goals can transform your approach and elevate your goal-setting game to a whole new level. What follows is as true in our everyday lives as it is in the workplace.

Digging Deeper: Why Does Your Goal Matter?

Let’s face it: life can get busy, and it’s easy to chase after goals without really considering why they matter to us. Whether it’s losing weight, advancing in your career, or learning a new skill, the surface-level desire often isn’t enough to keep you motivated when challenges arise.

This is where taking an in depth look at your “why” becomes very important. Take time to reflect on what you truly want, what all the effort is really about. To get started, you can e.g. ask yourself questions like: What will achieving this goal bring into my life? How will it change my day-to-day experience? What emotions do I associate with this goal?

By honestly answering these questions, you will start to uncover the deeper motivations that drive your journey through life.

Connecting Emotionally

Once you’ve identified your “why,” it’s very important to connect emotionally with it. Goals are not just tasks to check off a list; they represent aspirations tied to our values and dreams.

For example, if your goal is to get fit, perhaps it’s not just about looking good but feeling healthier to enjoy life more fully with loved ones. This emotional connection can serve as a powerful motivator during tough times.

Setting Intentional Goals

Now that you’re clear on your “why,” it’s time to set intentional goals. Intentionality means aligning your actions with your deeper motivations. Instead of vague resolutions like “I want to exercise more,” try something more specific and meaningful, like “I want to run a 5K so I can celebrate my health and inspire my kids.” This specificity not only clarifies the goal but also reinforces its importance in your life.

Visualizing Success

Another effective technique is visualization. Picture yourself achieving your goal and experiencing the emotions tied to that success. Visualization can create a mental roadmap that makes the journey feel even more tangible and achievable. It’s about seeing yourself not just reaching the finish line but enjoying every step along the way.

Staying Committed When Times Get Tough

Finally, remember that setbacks are part of any journey. When challenges arise, revisiting your “why” can help you to remain committed. It serves as a reminder of what you are working towards and why it matters, and helps to reignite your passion and determination.
