What Resilient People Do Differently by Cindy Stradling CSL, CPC

Life doesn’t always go according to plan. We all face disappointments, unexpected changes, difficult conversations, and times when we wonder how we are going to move forward.

Resilient people experience these challenges too. The difference is how they respond to them.

They Focus on what they can control.
Resilient people understand that some things are simply outside their control. Instead of spending too much time worrying about what they cannot change, they ask, “What can I do right now?” Sometimes the answer is taking action. Other times, it is changing their attitude or simply accepting the situation.

They Allow themselves to have bad days.
Being resilient doesn’t mean being positive all the time. Resilient people can feel frustrated, disappointed, sad, or overwhelmed like everyone else. They give themselves permission to feel those emotions without staying stuck in them. A difficult day is just that — one difficult day.

They Ask for help.
Strong people don’t always do everything alone. Resilient people know when to reach out to a friend, colleague, mentor, coach, or family member. Asking for support is not a weakness. Often, one conversation can help us see a situation differently. In fact, when we ask for help we give others the opportunity to contribute to you.

They Learn from setbacks.
When something doesn’t work out, resilient people try not to see it as a failure, they see it as feedback. Instead, they ask, “What can I learn from this?” Every challenge can teach us something about ourselves, our choices, or what we might do differently next time.

They Take the next small step.
When life feels overwhelming, looking too far ahead can make things seem even harder. Resilient people focus on the best next step. One phone call. One decision. One conversation. One small action. Progress doesn’t have to happen all at once.

Perhaps most importantly, resilient people trust that difficult times will not last forever.

Resilience isn’t something you either have or you don’t. It is something you build over time, often through the very challenges you wish you didn’t have to face.

The next time life throws you a curve ball, ask yourself one simple question: “What is one thing I can do today to move forward?”

Sometimes, that is all resilience requires.
