Core Values Revisited: Are You Still Living Yours? by Cindy Stradling CSL, CPC

Every single successful business is built on a foundation. While strategies, technology, and market conditions may change over time, the principles that guide the decisions of management should always remain consistent. These principles – your core values – are more than just words displayed on a company website or an office wall.

As your organization grows and adapt to changes, however, there is a very real risk that daily pressures will start to overshadow the very values that once defined them. Tight deadlines, financial targets, and rapid expansion can all unintentionally shift the focus away from integrity, collaboration, innovation, or customer commitment.

This is why every business leader should regularly ask him or herself an important question: Are we still living our core values, or are we simply talking about them?

At this stage it is important to note that revisiting your core values is not about rewriting them. It is, instead, about evaluating whether they are actually reflected in everyday actions.

– Do leaders consistently model the behaviours they expect from others?

– Are employees recognized for demonstrating the company’s values?

– Are difficult decisions made with those principles in mind, even when it is inconvenient?

If the answer to any of these questions is uncertain, it may be time to reconnect with your organizational foundation.

Involving The Team

One practical approach is to involve your team in the conversation. Encourage employees to identify examples of where the company’s values are being demonstrated effectively and where there may be room for improvement. Honest feedback often reveals whether core values are deeply embedded in the culture or simply viewed as corporate slogans. These discussions can also strengthen employee engagement by reinforcing a shared sense of purpose.

How do your systems support your values?

Recruitment, performance evaluations, promotions, and reward programs should all reinforce the behaviours your organization wants to encourage. If collaboration is listed as a core value but individuals are rewarded only for personal achievements, mixed messages will quickly undermine the culture.

Strong values help to provide clarity during periods of uncertainty. Whether facing economic challenges, organizational change, or unexpected crises, businesses with clearly defined and consistently practised values are often better equipped to make confident decisions. Employees know what is expected, customers know what the company stands for, and trust is strengthened through consistency.

Returning to the basics does not mean moving backwards. It actually means making sure that the foundation supporting future growth remains solid. Core values should, therefore, not be treated as a one-time exercise completed during a strategic planning session. They should serve as a daily guide for leadership, decision-making, and relationships throughout the organization.

As you plan your next business objective or strategic initiative, take a moment to revisit your foundation. When core values move beyond words and become visible in everyday actions, they create resilient organizations that inspire confidence, build lasting relationships, and achieve sustainable success.
