Managing Confrontation and Conflict

Difficult conversations are a normal part of any job and no one escapes them. Our capacity as individuals to manage these sensitive interactions determines whether relationships are strengthened, value is generated, and effective change occurs.

The ideas we use are built upon the groundbreaking work of the Harvard Negotiation Project, as published in the best-selling book “Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most” (Stone, Patton and Heen. New York: Penguin, 1999) and enhanced through many years of work with leading international corporations.

We address many of the key challenges in overcoming conflict avoidance and managing strong emotions, by using a strategic, step-by-step framework for starting and finishing essential conversations. You will also learn techniques designed to deepen your understanding of how the party or parties may see a given situation, tools for managing strong emotions – both yours and others’, and simple but powerful ideas that you can use to help you conduct these difficult conversations in order to address conflict more effectively.
